Today, Friday, 8 March, we join with other nations around the world to observe International Women’s Day under the theme #InspireInclusion.
I have a deep appreciation for the role that women play in our lives both here in the Cayman Islands and around the globe. Whether it’s in the home, workplace, government, boardroom, community, church and/or classroom, the inclusion of women in every part of our world elevates our experience. We all benefit from their empathy, intelligence, intuition, compassion and creativity which serves to make us better human beings.
I echo the noble sentiment expressed, and the aspirational goal declared through the International Women’s Day theme:
“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, discrimination and harassment. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together, we can forge women’s equality. Collectively, we can all #InspireInclusion.”
I encourage everyone in the Cayman Islands to have an inclusive mindset and make it an integral part of our culture, compelling us to challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination and harassment, and draw attention to bias.
I also take this opportunity to recognise and thank the incredible women in my life – my wife Jane, my mother Cecile and the wonderful women in my Newlands constituency – who help me, keep me accountable and motivate me every day to continue to fight for increased gender equity in this country.
